The immune system contains at least three anticancer agents: cytotoxic T lymphocytes,
natural killer (NK) cells and tumor necrosis factor.
These defenses always work against malignant and precancerous cells and protect us
more from tumor growth than most people realize.
However, it is a battle and they do not always win.
Also, these cells become less effective as we age, which is one of the reasons that many
cancers are more common in older than young people.
After the age of 65, we no longer produce these T cells.
In addition, as we age, we accumulate more uncorrected mutations, making us more
vulnerable to cancer.
For example, colon cancer requires 5 different mutations and takes years for them to
build up.
