• Vitamin D Deficiency

From Mike Dippel@999:1/1 to All on Sun Jul 20 21:04:24 2025
Why are so many people deficient in vitamin D, when it s easy for most people to step
outside and sit in the sun?

We ve been taught the sun is evil and getting a tan will give us skin cancer. However,
clinical evidence shows that the opposite is more likely. Not having ENOUGH vitamin D is
more likely to raise your cancer risk.

    2. Not all sun gives us vitamin D. Mainly it s the hot mid-day sun between 12 3pm or
from 11AM - 2 PM if on DST. You also need to have exposed skin and no sunscreen to
    get the maximum dose.

    3. Time of the year and especially latitude are key. In most northern latitudes, (New
England, the Great Lakes, the great Pacific NW in the US and all of Canada. there is a
Vitamin D winter from Nov to April. You can lay out, naked for all the most peak hours
and will never get much if any vitamin D, simply because the suns angle is not high
enough to make adequate amounts of sun.

I sort of intuitively knew too much sun can be bad (increasing risk of skin cancer) before I heard that was true. I live in the northwest US, and we get a lot of cloudy days and rain much of the year, so it can be hard to be in sunshine here. But I don't really like being out in the sun for too long anyway, as I start to get a bit uncomfortable.

I visited Seattle one year prior to an Alaskan cruise. Clouds and rain are actually what
we are seeing a lot of in Florida right now. I don't spend a lot of time outside during the
day anymore. If I take a walk, it is always at night. Cooler and more relaxing. I used
to spend way too much time in the sun: swimming, water skiing, boating, fishing.
Several bouts with melanomas has changed my thinking on that subject.

Fifty years ago at a high school beach party, I got broiled with sunburn...having to walk with bent legs, as the back of my legs
were burned so bad. Then, I peeled like a snake for nearly a month
afterwards. Had I not had a bathing suit on, I would've burned a
    few more items. :P

Now, I can sunburn in 10 minutes, plus I'm allergic to the stinging
insects, so it's rare that I go outside.

I think back to the original Coppertone (tm) ad, with the poodle
pulling down the pants of the little girl, showing the tan lines,
and her white butt. According to their entry on Wikipedia, there
is one "moving deal" in Miami, Florida (where they are based) with
the back and forth of the dog and the pants, going up and down.

I will say that they do have an excellent line of products.

Even better than baby oil and iodine? That's what my mother smothered on me when I
was young. That's also when I had to spend the next day indoors with a severe sunburn.

Yeah, I know of bad sunburns.. When I was 13, I went swimming at a public outside pool for much of the day, and I didn't really think about it much and didn't use sunscreen. I ended up getting a bad sunburn, and also peeled quite a bit..

I remember seeing Coppertone quite a bit, and SPF 4 fairly often in the 80s, and I wondered if SPF 4 was really adequate.. I felt like at least it was something, but maybe wasn't enough. I'm glad we have SPF 30 and higher these days.

There was a time, years ago now, when I went river rafting with some of my family, which went for maybe 6 hours during the day with little to no shade, in the summer. I was dilligent to bring sunscreen and re-apply as often as I had a chance, and I actually didn't get any sunburn, which I was thankful for. Also I think it helped that I was wearing a shirt and a life jacket, which provided some cover.

Not sure. When we got severe sunburn, we applied Solarcaine (sp?).

The year before I got married, my late father and I went back to
my old stomping grounds (south Florida) for the University Of Miami
and Florida State Football game. We were in the "lobster nosebleed
section" in the upper deck of the former Orange Bowl. I remembered
    to use sunscreen...my Dad didn't.

We also went down to Key West, Florida, and a single slice of Key
Lime Pie (freshly made, very tart) was $5 (this was in 2002). I can
imagine what it is now. I'd rather buy a slice in the grocery store.

When we went on a fall foliage steam train excursion in the early
1990's between Chattanooga and Oneida, Tennessee, and back, I was
wise to bring my safety goggles from work, along with plenty of eye
drops. My Dad didn't think about the embers from the coal burning
Norfolk And Western 611 locomotive, and he got cinders in his eyes.

Even spending time in the tanning booth too long with that UV light
    can lead to skin cancer.

I remember what the late Richard Pryor noted...basically, he could
not figure out why the white folks don't like our dark skin (the
negroes), when they spend an inordinate amount of time in the tanning
booth. He hit the nail on the head.

    :) I liked Richard Pryor.

I was never one to go tanning though. Even when I was a kid, I always imagined that might not be good for you. Turns out that was correct.

I've seen parts of that movie. And they were in several movies together - I remember seeing "Hear No Evil, See No Evil" years ago, which had both of them.

    Mickey,

You a redhead Daryl? If so, I know the feeling. :-)

Actually, salt and pepper (gray and black)...where it used to be
    all black.

Speaking of redheads, we've all heard of female blondes. But, male
    blondes DO exist.

In this old west town, the sheriff noted this guy walking down the
street, naked as a jaybird!! The sheriff asked the man "What's The
    Big Idea??".

The man replied "Well, I met this pretty young lady in the bar. After
we had a few drinks, we went up to her room, and took off all our
clothes. Then, she told me 'Go To Town'...so, here I am". <G>
