I finally found a copy of this on DVD and watched it again the other
night.
I enjoyed it, even though it seems others panned the follow-up to 2001
From my point of view it did a pretty good job of following on from the 2001 plot and I now find myself thinking I should go grab a copy of the third book in the series and give it read :)
I remember seeing the film, (and reading the book to look for
answers to my questions) ..but I do recall being unimpressed
with the stories. The source of the monoliths is still
unexplained - if I recall. And how/why Bowman achieves the
ability to transport himself like an omnipotent being/spirit
left questions.
I don't think I even bothered finishing the 3rd book.
omg.. there is even a 4th:
I recently watched Arrival. That too was kinda hard to embrace
- particularly the physical representation of the aliens, and
how they even managed to build the spaceship they travel in.

I liked 2010. There are 4 books if I'm not mistaken - 2001, 2010, 2061: Odyssey Three, and 3001: The Final Odyssey. I liked 3001 a lot.

It's been a while since I have seen that, must look it up.
I did revisit Contact recently and also found the final
journey that Jodie Foster took when the capsule drops
rather anticlimactic.
