I finally found a copy of this on DVD and watched it again the other night.

I enjoyed it, even though it seems others panned the follow-up to 2001

From my point of view it did a pretty good job of following on from the 2001 plot and I now find myself thinking I should go grab a copy of the third book in the series and give it read :)

Yes I checked a Wikipedia article about the book series and it noted a number of inconsistencies between each story, some related to when the author opted to pen the next installment.

I hope I can get through the third book. I watched a review on YouTube recently and the guy thought book three was better than book two, he rated them book 1, 3 then 2 in terms of his preferences for the first three books.

It's been a while since I have seen that, must look it up.

I did revisit Contact recently and also found the final journey that Jodie Foster took when the capsule drops rather anticlimactic.

I liked 2010. There are 4 books if I'm not mistaken - 2001, 2010, 2061:
Odyssey Three, and 3001: The Final Odyssey. I liked 3001 a lot.

I watched it too, years ago, and I enjoyed it. I feel like the pacing was better, making it easier to keep interest (2001, while good, had slow pacing at times).

And I think it's interesting now to see what older sci-fi books (and movies) predicted for the future - most often they're over-optimistic. I wasn't born until later, but it seems like interest in space exploration was big in the late 60s (due to the moon landing), and I imagine people assumed it would continue that way.

I'm glad I'm not alone (no alien pun intended) I enjoyed 2010 also but man it was hard to find a copy to watch.

It's been a while since I have seen that, must look it up.

The "twist" at the end was a smooth reveal. I liked it.

I did revisit Contact recently and also found the final
journey that Jodie Foster took when the capsule drops
rather anticlimactic.

Same here about the anticlimax. But, in retrospect, there was
something about the recording that proved the trip was real.
That wasn't too bad, but it still left a lot to be desired.
