That's cool. :) If I had room, I might think about buying a used Amiga.. But then, I worry I'd only play with it for a little while and then get bored with it and won't be able to think of what to use it for..

Open her up and remove the battery if it's not already been done.

They leak acid all over the mb and destroy them.
Do a youtube search for cleaning the board up.

In college, most everyone who wasn't in CS got a Mac Plus on one of
those horrendous, Apple Credit cards with the 24% APR.

CS geeks had cobbled together ATs and the odd 386, using Procomm to
connect to big iron and Turbo C or MS C to compile locally.

I had an XT case with an AT motherboard bought at a swap meet. Soldered
in fsaster clock crystal. Most of the stand-offs didn't line up, so the motherboard was secured to the case with one screw and pieces of
styrofoam. An RLL drive that sounded like a bathroom fan, keyboard port
didn't quite line up, and once in a while you had to jiggle the power
switch to get it to come on.

I only knew one Amiga user, come to think of it didn't even know they
had a simple compiler for student use!

    nice1 Paulie!

Having watched him 'complain' about the fact that it 204beers doesn't look quite right on his XT / procomm terminal is yet another reason why I keep my bbs fairly compatible. I always try to make sure that my board doesn't look crappy, but it does at least work 100% on a retro PC. I can't say I've tried it using a real terminal like Procomm but I dare say it should work there too. It definetly works on Michael Brutman's mTelnet.

If you can, I'd recommend you have a 'compatible' version of 204beers, and I appreciate you for enabling UTF8 so that mTelnet works, there are a few other enhancements you can make to your board to make it have a compatible mode. BBSes are retro things, therefore I always think that they should stay retro, for example, big screen 120xwhatever doesn't work with a DOS computer, therefore I don't consider those a true BBS. 20forbeers does rock, and I'm glad that Adrian showed off a really good example of a BBS. Shame it couldn't work 100% for him, but still, it is a great BBS!

I always referred to mTelnet as the one that comes with mTCP:

    https://www.brutman.com/mTCP/mTCP_Telnet.html

That one always worked fine for me on my DOS computer with regular old CP437..

I'm now thinking maybe I've been referring to it by the wrong name this whole time as I don't believe the Brutman one does UTF8 at all... oops! :)

Its just simply not an option at this point - I've spent days, months and years modifying 2o... I always laugh b/c 2oFB isn't the best designed bbS at ALL - but it is what it is; and I'm lucky that the ppl love it. :P

I've thought about two options for legacy hardware; one is just having an ASCII/light ANSi version of 2oFB - but it wouldn't be all of what the main board is. Another idea was to have STOCK BBS softwares all under one 2oFB legacy-friendly matrix login; Telegard, Searchlight, CBBS, Obv/2, etc etc etc - with a local FTN so all the message areas were all 'networked' (locally).

I kinda wanna work on that latter idea sometime soon... of course, they'd be accessible on the main 2oFB - but I could have some other TELNET addy for legacy hardware... 2oFB is already cooked for what it is. :P

I like the ASCII mode idea - I had a caller call with a dumb terminal
and started playing with it in Synchronet. Memory fades, but I think
there's a tool to convert ANSI to ASCII, so I made ASCII version of my
menus. If you call with an ASCII terminal, it automatically displays an
    .ASC menu file.

You miss out on the ANSI art, but it's relatively easy to set up.
