Deep Sky Sights around Antares (evening)

Scorpius' brightest star, the red supergiant Antares, is flanked by two hot, white stars. Magnitude 3.1 Al Niyat I (also known as Sigma Scorpii), which is located 2 degrees to the northwest of Antares, is a B1-class star with a surface temperature of 36,200 K. The magnitude 2.8 star Tau Scorpii, which is located 2.25 degrees to the southeast, is a B0-class star with a surface temperature of 30,000 K. The very bright and large globular cluster Messier 4 (NGC 6121) located only 1.3 degrees west of Antares will be visible in good binoculars and any telescope on a dark night. A larger aperture telescope will reveal the smaller globular cluster Messier 80 (NGC 6093) positioned 4.4 degrees northwest of Antares, and bluish reflection nebulosity that surrounds the multiple star Rho Ophiuchi and other nearby stars.
