My understanding is that a cname maps one domain to another - that
doesn't sound like something I want; or do I have that wrong?
And my understand is that an A record maps a domain to an IP address - that doesn't sound like it's for me either, because I have a VPS but I don't have a unique IP address.
Shadowscope.com is hosted offsite, through Livingdot. I map bbs.shadowscope.com using CNAME to my dynamic dns name, shadowscope.noip.us, which resolves to my BBS.

But if you had a static IP then you wouldn't need the CNAME, right?
In your case, I suggest you get a DYnamic IP provider, which will allow you to update the IP address of an A record.
Thanks for this explanation. I'll admit, it's been explained to me
before but went over my head. I'm going to work on this..

The .bbs TLD will not work for 99.9% of the users. AFAIK
it's a opennic domain, it's not listed in the IANA
database.
