  • new google scam?

    This is one is new - at least for me.

    I got a phone call from someone claiming to notice that my google mybiz info may not be accurate, and they wanted to know my hours to make adjustments on their system. I start talking.. but then the person claims that the connection must be bad, can't hear me and instructs me to simply call back using a certain number. Of course!

    Reminds me of a few years back when I received a couple of "domain renewal notices" in the mail.

    Turns out it was a bait-and-switch domain reseller that was harvesting whois data and mailing out "renewal" forms. Whether they transfer your domain to them or just take the money & run, I don't know.

    I got calls like that a few years ago. At first I just let them go to voice mail but eventually I answered one. Before proceeding I insisted that they tell me what the name of my business was (the one they claimed had problems). But obviously they couldn't do that..

    Oh I still get that shit for one of my clients. And it looks "real" enough.

    I don't use CallerID so I *have* to answer every call to find
    out what it is.

    Sometimes when I am not really expecting any important calls,
    I put those people on HOLD, and wait for them to hang up. I
    love doing that.

    Most of those calls begin with "May we speak to the person in
    charge of the merchant accounts". Obviously, they do not have
    a name researched ahead of time. I never give them a name. I
    would simply answer with.. "Speaking." And I try not to use
    the word YES at any time.

    In the google call, I realized near the end of the call it was
    just a recording. It reminded me of the some of the telephone
    answering games some people would play by recording something
    like: "Hello? ....[long pause], Hi. ....[long pause] Uh-Ha
    ...[long pause] Interesting ...[long pause] Sorry, I can't
    come to the phone right now. Leave a message after the beep!"

    I encountered a few of those over time.

    I still get calls from Canadian POS (and others) who want my
    sales data so that they can analyse how much I'll save with
    their debit/cc point-of-sale rates.

    Totally annoying.

    When I get those, I do not shy from making sure other people
    in the store hear me say soemthing like: "Unless you'd like to
    buy - and pay for a book right now, I don't have time to talk
    about anything else."
