• Yankee Trader: Resurrection

From Robbie Whiting@3:633/2744.11 to All on Tue Nov 3 15:27:57 2026
Lots of activity around Yankee Trader lately, I wanted to post my 'take' on the preservation efforts. It's a space war game with a lot of depth (complex rules, movement and calculations), so i first started this as a kind of 'archeology' approach to document the heck out of the observed rules - then, I figured anyone could pick it up and build a UI on top of it.

Primarily GPT 6.1 (Sol) with REA to inspect the binaries.

The documented evidence is about 95% done at the GitHub URL below, and I also took a stab at re-creating it as a Go-based BBS door (using GoDoors). It's fairly complete, but needs testing. It has only been tested on Linux on my BBS, but it will compile on Windows as well (and could add ARM/Pi support).

This is not my game. Alan Davenport wrote the original, and the source has been lost to time. This is a homage. I added "Resurrection" to the name just to let players know it's the re-creation :)

    Would love playtesting and feedback.

I poked around on that site but couldn't figure out how to download it. Do we need to do a git pull and compile it ourselves, or is there a downloadable binary link on there that I missed?

I haven't created a release package yet, but I can. I'll also add some instructions for compiling and generating the universe. Cheers.

I created a release page to download it, and a cheat sheet for running it. Let me know if you run into any problems!

Thanks! It seems to work well in local mode, but when I try to run it as a door (under linux), the program immediately exits and I get the following error:

    cd /home/bbs/xtrn2/YTR
    ./yt -data /home/bbs/xtrn2/YTR/data -drop /home/bbs/Public/Scorpio/var/scorpio/node${NODE} -system capcity

invalid communication handle: strconv.ParseUint: parsing "-1": invalid syntax

I double-checked the paths and they are correct.

    Thanks!

OK, I pinpointed that error. It's in the GoDoors library, Linux door mode was rejecting an unused handle before selecting standard I/O. D'oh!

Let me create a new release and hopefully that fixes it. I'll also bundle it with all the latest updates. Should have that later this evening.

    Thanks for testing!!

Just download and extract the .tar.gz archive from that link (in "assets") and replace your existing yt with the new one. Keep your data and launch command as they are.

Let me know if that works? Cheers.

This version works better. I am able to load it on the BBS now. I called into the BBS using Syncterm. The splash ANSI screen comes out garbled -- not a big deal -- but there is also a cosmetic issue with the main menu prompt. The cursor shows up where you expect it to for the first "clock tick" but as soon as a second clicks off the game clock, the cursor moves into the prompt text.

What it looks like to me, after typing 'p' to port:

    Time: 457:50p Main Command (?=Help)?

You can see the 'p' gets entered in an odd-looking spot.

What it looks like in the Syncterm session capture:

    Time: 457:50 Main Command (?=Help)? 457:49457:48457:47457:46457:45457:44457:43p

It does allow me to port, and the prompt from the Earth menu looks and acts normally.

Returning to the main menu and attempting to stack a command to access the computer and move to sector 3000, c;3;3000;y, causes all of the characters typed to appear to be typed over one another. What that looks like to me, after typing the stacked command:

    Time: 457:21y Main Command (?=Help)?

What that looks like in the session capture:

    Time: 457:35 Main Command (?=Help)? 457:34457:33457:32457:31457:30457:29457:28457:27457:26c457:24;3;457:22457:213000;y

Hitting enter does take me to sector 3000 as requested.

The Computer command prompt also has a similar issue to the main command prompt... the cursor moves over to the position after the time. Like the main command prompt, the computer prompt will also accept and act on what is typed.

The door is running with stdio set to TRUE, in case that matters. If I start the program in local mode from a command prompt, these cosmetic issues disappear.
