    I got conky running last night on my crochety old T42 laptop running Lubuntu.

    Conky lets you put a transparent window with system stats and other information on the desktop. Looks featureful, was pretty simple to install and configure, and it works on a slow system. Check it out...

    I first came across conky on Puppy or Slitaz years ago. Really nice
    utility if you have to pay close attention to your resources. Thanks
    for bringing it up, I'd forgotten about that one.
