    understand why Google Maps no longer helps people avoid high-crime areas.

    It's not enough nowadays to have good intentions if an indication of
    racism can be claimed. Most people don't read beyond the headline any

    Certainly. But if you are in a car and trying to get directions back to
    your hotel, for example, you are depending on services like google not to
    steer you through bad areas but they do now.

    The ironic thing is that, in the particular case I am thinking of, not only
    did it take me through a bad area, it took me out of my way to get there.
    I later figured out I could have taken a left sooner and had a
    straight-shot back to where I wanted to go. That would have also taken me through a business and commercial area rather than a residential one.

    Indeed. In this case, I doubt I would have made a headline unless
    something bad happened while I was being taken through a rough area. I
    could not even tell you for sure what the racial makeup of that area was.

    Ironically, if you were to ask me what one area of my town to avoid, it
    would be an area that is very white. It is also ok during the daytime, at least as long as you stay on the main drag. I'd only go there at night if
    I was looking to get into a bar fight or to score drugs.
