  • Looking for a little advice...

    I am challenged right now with my only access being stuck behind a shitty filter and I was hoping I could get a little help. Now, I am a retro geek and love a challenge, but this sucks.

    Think of it like a desert island scenario, if you will. Say you only had ftp and telnet, as if you got time warped back to the nineties (but you have Windows10 - meh) and had to start from scratch. What tools do you use?

    Currently I found a win32 telnet program called mTelnet, but it doesn't support TLS encryption, so I can't even talk to smtp/imap.gmail.com. What would you do? What software is essential? How do you get basic email services?

    Would love some help, my friends.

    What are you challenged with, and what filter are you stuck behind?

    For FTP, as I don't use it much, I just use the Linux console (ftp) client, and on my Windows machine, I use WinSCP. If I had the need to use it more often, I'd probably go with something like Filezilla.

    For telnet, I use Syncterm or the Linux console (telnet), really. But there's others out there, like IcyTerm, Magiterm, Netrunner, and probably a few others I don't remember.

    mTelnet is quite old and outdated. Still works great for telnet, but that's about, if not all it supports (as the name implies).

    I guess my question in this case is, why are you trying to use a telnet program for email services? Unless I'm misunderstanding something here.

    Even in the 90's we had email clients. :) Can you not use an ssh client
    to connect to a free shell like sdf.org or something? From there you could
    use pine or alpine for email.

    The last email client I wrote was a BBS door and it was so long ago email didn't have encryption. LOL So I do know with the correct terminal you
    should be able to read / write email using nothing but telnet.

    I use Magiterm for BBS telnet / ssh.

    Remeber, I am starting from scratch on a blank Win10 sys, no root access, and the devil's own browneye for a filter. How can I make an account on SDF.org if I can't go to SDF.org?

    I still don't think you've explained what this "filter" actually is.

    Otherwise, Thunderbird is a great email client for Win10.

    Actually it is made by a co called FortiGuard and it is the devil's own arse when you are stuck behind it for your only net access all day long...
